Cherry Class (Y4 & Y5)

Welcome to our class page. We hope you enjoy looking at all our hard work!

Being prepared for school each day

Children will need their waterproof coat, a bottle filled with water, a bag for reading books and homework and a packed lunch (if required). Pencil cases and other school equipment will be provided for children by school. It is important that we limit what is being brought into school, so pencil cases and other accessories from home won’t be needed.

Uniform
Please ensure that your child’s uniform is all labelled, including ties.  A coat must be brought to school each day, as we go out come rain or shine.

P.E date has changed
Every Monday morning so please ensure your child brings in their P.E kit. Hair must be tied back and earrings removed for P.E day.

Forest Schools

Cherry Class will have their own Forest School session, separate from Apple Class. Please ensure your child brings in suitable warm and waterproof clothing and wellies. This will take place once a half-term see dates on the calendar.

Swimming – Year 4 only

Lots of giggles in Cherry Blossom Class this afternoon, as we tested out our string telephones. Lots of great discussion followed  about how the sound was transmitted.

Lots of great discussion about how to use the internet safely,  this afternoon. Cherry Blossom Class gave very mature answers in an internet safety quiz.

Cherry Blossom class using playdoh to create the structure of the earth.

This morning, Cherry Class made a simple animation in the form of a moving book or flip book. You would have heard a pin drop in the classroom,  while they wrote fantastic explanations of how to create one of these little books.

The children at St. Margaret’s made advent wreaths, decorated the Christmas tree, held a Nativity for family to watch and enjoyed their Christmas dinner.

Action shots from Mini Medics session with Roger.  The children learnt how to put someone in the recovery position, CPR and defib training.

Cherry Blossom Class (Y3,4, & 5) enjoyed Forest School on Tuesday

Some of the children in Cherry Class, busily sketching British animals, in the style of Stone Age cave art.

Here we are creating positive and negative handprints, just like the ones Stone Age people  left on cave walls. It was a fun but very messy lesson.

Stonehenge made with biscuits and icing sugar. No adult help and not as easy as it looks. The children really rose the challenge and worked brilliantly in their teams.  Some of them were huge though!

Cherry Class making little rosary chaplets and praying the Rosary together.

Cherry Class kindly came to read to Apple Class this morning. It was a lovely start to the day!

Cave Art

As part of Glossop Heritage Week celebrations our school was invited to undertake pieces of art work which reflected either the heritage or local history of the area.
Mrs Fletcher worked with some of our children to create a wonderful selection of artwork based on Vivienne Westwood. It will be displayed on Saturday 9th September & Saturday 16th September at Victoria Hall Glossop.
Put the dates in your diary!!

We had a busy morning as the new ‘year 3’ children joined our class. Here we are playing a game that involved us working really well as a team. We also thought of adjectives to describe our friends; here we are with the results! The children really enjoyed reading the complimentary adjectives that their friends had chosen to describe them.

Star readers and respect badges given out at assembly today.  Well done to all of you.

Our cheerleaders were so excited before they set off this morning. Here they are looking smart in their outfits.

Here are a few photos of the boys baking cookies with me this morning. Such careful measuring and great team work.  What a lovely way to spend some time together when the other children were cheerleading. Thanks to Mrs Done for rescuing them after Mrs Brown thought that it would be a good idea to grill them instead of bake them!

Coronation good news assembly.

Some of the older children helped introduce measuring with the year 1 and Reception children today. Lots of fantastic teamwork and hands on experience

We had a great morning Bunny hopping to raise money for Willow Wood Hospice.

The children received their Easter Garden by the very talented Mrs Hill.  The children will be using the garden to help them retell the important events that happened at Easter in a creative way.

Class 2 Reading stars.

It make not feel like it at the moment, but spring has definitely arrived in Class 2!  Bright and cheerful spring flowers and poems.

Class 2 marked Safer Internet Day by participating in an excellent live lesson organised by the BBC. We had very sensible discussions and participated in tasks and challenges to drive home how to use the internet sensibly and safely.

What a fantastic day Class 2 had when we visited the Royal Armouries on Wednesday.  In the morning, we enjoyed a trail around the museum which allowed us to compare Roman armour with armour from other eras.  There were also two live demonstrations of different types of sword fight, which made for an interesting watch.  In the afternoon we participated in two workshops, the first of which was Roman drills and the second was an enthralling Iceni storytelling session.  The children were an absolute joy to be with as they were so engaged in the activities provided.

Elf day @ St. Margaret’s for Alzheimers. The children and staff had a great day.

Look at Class 2 thinking about shape and geometry when sketching these drinks cans.  You would have heard a pin drop!

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Class 2 laugh so heartily as we looked at how the digestive system works during Science this afternoon.  If there are lots of questions about bodily functions at home, you know why! They were fantastic at explaining the journey that food takes through the digestive system.

Aren’t we so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area?  Here’s a very sunny photo of class 2 walking along the east perimeter of Melandra Fort, beside what would have been the granary.  And one of us all together at the east gate.  Amazing to think of the events that would have taken please here.  Can you pinpoint the features on your next walk there?

Class 1 and 2 had a walk to Gamesley library last week.  We had the opportunity to share a variety of different books and many children became new members! The children were well-mannered and sensible on our walk to and from the library and it was an enjoyable experience for all. We will plan another trip before Christmas.

Class 2 is preparing for Remembrance Day this Friday. We enjoyed painting poppies by following an artist’s instructions. Aren’t they beautiful?

Class 2 had a great afternoon at Forest Schools.

Class 2 enjoyed using mirrors to reflect light off different surfaces.  They recognised, again, that light reflects much better off smooth, shiny surfaces.
Then they had fun using mirrors to decipher their partner’s secret messages.

Have a look at Class 2 using the Djembe drums for the first time.  There was a lot to remember, including the different positions for playing and when at ease.  All of the work on developing good listening skills was well worth it as the children were fantastic at keeping the beat.

Class 2 had a great afternoon learning how to keep a beat and how to be good musician.

Class 2 testing a variety of materials to see which reflect light the best and would be the most useful on a child’s bookbag in order to keep them safe.  With the nights closing in, it was a very useful investigation.

Class 2 learning how to make different tertiary colours last week.

Class 2 enjoying a feely bag activity which proved that we need light in order to see.  There were lots of good guesses as to what was in the bags!
As part of Glossop Heritage Week celebrations our school was invited to undertake pieces of art  work which reflected either the heritage or local history of the area.
Mrs Fletcher worked with some of our children to create a wonderful selection of pieces of art which were then put on display at Victoria Hall Glossop.
The project asked the children to look at two Victorian local pictures and then recreate their own interpretation of them.
The art work, from all primary schools who took part in the exhibition were then judged by a professional local artist Ghislaine Howard.
I am pleased to say that on Tuesday this week Mrs Fletcher was able to attend Victoria Hall with three of our children to receive certificates and a wonderful prize of mixed art materials for the school.
In addition to the prize for the school one of our pupils won a prize and certificate for her individual piece of work.
Well done to everyone for their wonderful work we are very proud of you.

Jabberwocky

Class 2 had a fantastic day learning all about Japanese culture and traditions.  All the children looked fabulous in their costumes!

Did you know that the school year in Japan starts in April, at the same time as the blossoms appear on the trees. They are a sign of new life.
We also looked at a selection of beautiful, Japanese painted silk squares.  We recognised lots of the Japanese scenes depicted on them.

Fabulous bit of artwork from one of Year 3 students.  Well done!!11

Class 2 had a great day out on the Titanic trip.

Woody from Willow Wood came to meet the staff and children today to say thank you for the huge donation for the Easter Bunny Hop.

Well done 200 books read!!!!! Amazing!

The children at St. Margaret’s took part in the Willow Wood Bunny Hop to raise money for Willow Wood Hospice.  They had a fantastic afternoon in the sun hopping over obstacles with their bunny ears on.  They have raised over £400.  Well done to all the children from Class 1 & 2.

Cafod Walk against Hunger
Tired little legs now, but they did it!
Thank you for all of the donations so far.  Every bit helps to stamp out hunger!

Class Two’s Collective Worship where we reflected on Jesus’ time in the desert.  We thought about the Lenten promises we made at the start of Lent and whether or not we were keeping them. What signs of Lent can you see on the prayer focus?

Do you know how many faces a cube has? What shape are the faces on a hexagonal prism? We used paint to print the faces on 3D shapes to find out. Thank goodness we chose yellow paint!

Well done for achieving your GOLD star for reading!

Class 2 playing dodgeball in P.E

Mr Lolley and Mrs Brown World Book Day

Class 2 World Book Day

Class 2 book scavenger hunt and story time.

R.S.E
Our first topic this half-term is Promises: Why do we make promises?  and looks at the Sacrament of Baptism.  The second topic is: Visitors: are visitors always welcome? It focuses on the season of advent and the coming of Jesus.  We will think about different visitors that together form part of the Christmas story- the Annunciation, the Visitation and the visit from the Wise Men.

English
This half-term we will be learning how to write reports on the theme of endangered animals and saving the last of different species of animals.  We will learn how to make our work more readable by writing in paragraphs and extend our sentences by including expanded nouns and prepositions. One of the texts we will enjoy using is ‘Last’ by Nicola Davies.

Reading
Please listen to your child read, and ask them a variety of questions, as often as you can, preferably daily.  I have put a list of questions inside the cover of the reading diary to help with this.  It is important that the children are really made to think and consider what they have read so questions such as those listed below really help, as does looking at and discussing any illustrations.-
What do think will happen next?
Why do you think that?
What does that tell you about the character?
What could have the character done instead?
***Please sign and comment when you have read with your child.

Spelling
Spelling will start to get a little more challenging this half-term so it is really important to complete the five tries at home each week.  Please remember not to complete it all at once, little and often is best.
Please also help your child to create a sentence, orally, that includes their spelling words.  Some weeks there will also be a word search on the reverse of the spelling page for your child to enjoy.  Searching for the words also helps to improve spelling.  Remember that the spelling test will be on a Monday.

Maths
Each group will be working on addition and subtraction followed by multiplication and division.

Please keep using EdShed to practise times tables at home.  Top Marks is another site which is free, and is great, for practising number bonds and times tables.
Times tables underpin a lot of the maths work in Key Stage 2 so they need to be practised often in order to be accurate and fast, not just at the multiplication facts, but also the corresponding division facts.  Even when learning a new table , please keep revising those learnt previously.

Please use these free maths websites to help your child with addition, subtraction but also their times tables.

Maths Frame:   mathsframe.co.uk

There are also lots of catchy times tables songs available online.

R.E

History & Geography
We will finish off our topic on the Romans in the next couple of weeks and will then start our Geography topic of ‘All Around the World’.  This topic includes lots of learning, including the position of the equator, the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere. We will investigate the polar regions and compare the climate of the UK with countries in the tropics. We will also look at the different time zones so please have a chat with your child about the time differences of any countries they might have visited on holiday or of any relatives living abroad.

Science
This half-term’s topic is all about the human digestive system and the different parts and functions of the digestive system. We will also learn about the different types and function of human teeth and also about how and why teeth decay.

Music
Djembe drumming lessons will continue on Fridays.

Homework

CHANGES:  Century or any paper homework will be set on Fridays from now on and  will need to be completed for the following Friday.

Spelling will continue to be set on a Monday and tested on a Monday.

*** Please send reading records and reading books into school daily.

Homework will be given out on a Monday and returned on a Monday.  Please get into the habit of daily reading and recording in the Reading Diary.  Monday they will have reading and spelling, as I know the children will still be settling into routines.  Week 3,  reading, spelling, maths and English homework will be set each week.

Homework will be a combination of paper homework and online activities.

Each half-term there will also be a topic challenge that your child works on at home and then brings into school during the last week before the half-term holiday.  I will give you more information about that once we get our topic, which is The Romans, underway
